Li Ka-shing's business empire and the Lee Shau-kee family's Henderson Land Development each pledged 15 million yuan (US$2.2 million) to help victims of the flash floods that tore through the Nepal-Tibet border last week.

CK Asset Holdings, CK Hutchison Holdings and the Li Ka Shing Foundation made the joint pledge on the Li side. Henderson Land and the Lee Shau Kee Foundation matched it separately. Both donations went through the disaster relief account run by the central government's liaison office in Hong Kong. Nina Wang Charity Management added a further HK$10 million (US$1.27 million).

The money follows a wave of institutional giving that started days earlier. Hong Kong's government set aside HK$50 million from its Disaster Relief Fund, the Hong Kong Jockey Club committed HK$20 million, and the Macau government pledged 30 million yuan of its own.

The disaster began last Wednesday, when a glacier collapse above the Langtang Lirung peak sent a wall of mud, ice and rock into the Trishuli river system, wiping out villages and border infrastructure at the Gyirong crossing. As of Tuesday afternoon, Nepalese police had recovered 1,058 bodies and were still searching for 4,606 people. Chinese authorities put their side of the border at 16 dead and 546 missing, bringing the combined toll to 1,074 confirmed deaths.

Rescue crews on both sides of the border have spent the past week digging through metres of mud at Gyirong Port, pausing at least once over fears that a barrier lake formed by the landslide could breach and send a second flood downstream.
