CATL's chairman just called his own industry's breakneck launch pace a safety risk. That admission cuts against the assumption that only foreign critics worry about China's EV speed.

The Warning Came From Inside the Industry

Zeng Yuqun leads CATL, the world's largest maker of EV batteries. Speaking by video at the 2026 World Power Battery Conference in Yibin, Sichuan, on September 3, he said domestic automakers launched more than 600 new vehicle models this year. That works out to nearly three new models a day — or one new car roughly every 8 hours.

Zeng did not name a single automaker or battery supplier. He described the problem as industry-wide, not a specific company's failure.

Why "Faster" Became "Riskier"

Zeng said automakers now compete on speed, specifications, and price. Development cycles keep shrinking, he said, and that comes "at the cost of product quality and consumer trust." He added that some battery products have suffered "batch failures" — his word choice, translated directly, was closer to "shocking" than "concerning."

Here's the mechanism behind that claim. A shorter development cycle means less time for durability testing before a battery pack ships. When a flaw slips through, it doesn't affect one car — it affects an entire batch built on the same line in the same window.

The Standard CATL Says It's Defending

Zeng also introduced what he called the "CATL Quality" standard: battery cell failure rates held to one in a billion. That threshold is stricter than the safety margins used in most commercial jet engines. Zeng's own framing suggested that standard is now under pressure from the industry's development pace, not that CATL has failed to meet it.

He cited two field examples to back the claim: a battery pack shown at the Beijing auto show retained 88% of capacity after 84,000 km over six years, and a Zhangbei grid-storage project kept over 80% capacity after nine years of operation. These figures came from a single published report and have not been independently verified elsewhere.

The Scale Behind the Warning

China's new-energy vehicle sales topped 7.4 million units in the first half of 2026, nearly half of all car sales in the country. Global EV battery installations exceeded 608 GWh over the same period, with Chinese suppliers holding seven of the top ten spots and more than 70% of global market share.

That scale is exactly why Zeng's comments carry weight. A quality problem in an industry this large doesn't stay contained to one factory or one country.

What to Watch Next

CATL has not disclosed a company-specific defect rate tied to this warning, and Zeng did not name any automaker as an example of the risk he described. The open question is whether China's automakers respond by slowing launch cycles — or whether Zeng's billion-to-one failure standard becomes the next marketing claim the market has to test for itself.
