It's tempting to assume near-simultaneous outages share one root cause, like a single broken piece of internet plumbing. No company has confirmed that. OpenAI attributed its disruption to an internal routing error. Anthropic cited an infrastructure issue with Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and its API. xAI acknowledged problems with Grok on its status page but did not explain why. One industry analysis found no public evidence that AWS, Azure, or Cloudflare suffered a failure broad enough to explain all three incidents at once.

What "Routing Error" Actually Means

This isn't the model getting dumber. A routing error means the internal system that directs user requests to the right servers broke down — the equivalent of a traffic dispatcher losing the map. The AI itself wasn't malfunctioning; the delivery system around it was.

The Numbers Don't Fully Line Up

Reports on how long the outages lasted diverge by outlet, so the honest range is roughly three to four hours before service was fully restored. Downdetector logged tens of thousands of error reports tied to ChatGPT in the U.S. during the disruption. Google's Gemini also saw a rise in user-reported errors around the same time, though Google has not confirmed an outage of its own. Cursor, which relies on Grok and Claude's underlying models, was reportedly affected downstream as well.

A Coincidence Dressed Up as a Pattern

Three companies stumbling in the same hour looks like a domino effect. What the evidence actually shows is closer to three separate trips happening to land in the same sixty minutes, not one shared cause tripping all of them. That distinction matters for anyone betting on AI uptime as a stable utility.

The open question: none of the three companies has published a post-mortem naming a definitive cause. Until OpenAI, Anthropic, or xAI releases a formal incident report, whether September 3 was coincidence or a hidden shared dependency remains unconfirmed.
