Close Brothers profit drop in "challenging" market

Close Brothers, the merchant Bank has reported a drop in profits in the first half of 2008, and has described market conditions as "challenging".

The company reported a drop in operating profits before tax, exceptional items and goodwill impairment, of two per cent, down to 75.3 million for the six months ended 31 January 2008.

Colin Keogh, chief executive of the company, said, "The first half performance has been resilient against a backdrop of challenging market and trading conditions."
